Ref School

Join our Tomorrowland team by becoming a skating official today!

In roller derby, officials work together to keep the game fair, safe, and running smoothly. They fall into two main groups: skating officials (SOs) and non-skating officials (NSOs).

Skating Officials (SOs)
Skating officials move around the track on skates during gameplay. Their main job is to watch the action closely and enforce the rules. They track penalties, signal calls, and communicate with other referees to make sure gameplay stays fair and consistent. Because they’re skating alongside the pack, they can see hits, positioning, and penalties as they happen.

Non-Skating Officials (NSOs)
Non-skating officials work off-skates, usually from designated areas around the track or at the score table. They handle the game’s logistics and recordkeeping—tracking points, penalties, lineups, and time. NSOs ensure the game data is accurate and that referees and teams have the information they need throughout the bout.

Working as a Team
Both groups are essential to roller derby. Skating officials focus on rule enforcement on the track, while non-skating officials manage the timing, scoring, and documentation that keep the game organized. Together, they make sure every bout runs smoothly.
